Project Overview

SK hynix's Investment

Maintaining America's technology leadership requires a robust and sustainable computing infrastructure to develop and deploy next-generation applications. This includes fostering ecosystem partnerships and advanced resource planning to ensure reliable, scalable support for the high energy demands of advanced computational workloads.

SK hynix, a leading global memory chip maker and the top provider of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), plans to invest approximately $4 billion in West Lafayette, Indiana.

This investment will fund the construction of advanced packaging facilities for HBM production and R&D on a 133.5-acre site, and is expected to create an estimated 7,000 direct and indirect jobs across construction, R&D, and operations, while anchoring a broader regional semiconductor ecosystem.

Once the project is completed, this investment will represent the largest single development project in the history of the State of Indiana.

Strategic Implications

The SK hynix facility is not only unique to West Lafayette, but also holds greater importance across the United States. It is set to become America's first advanced packaging and R&D hub for HBM, a critical component for high-performance computing technologies.

The strategic significance of this advanced packaging facility includes, but is not limited to:

  • Closing a critical gap in the domestic semiconductor ecosystem by establishing the first advanced packaging facility in the United States, enabling full-stack chip capabilities to be delivered on U.S. soil.
  • Advancing the "Made in America" initiative by supporting memory chip production, the development of U.S. intellectual property, and a skilled domestic talent pipeline through a potential partnership with institutions such as Purdue University and Ivy Tech.
  • Strengthening supply chain security by reducing dependence on overseas suppliers and laying the foundation for globally competitive advanced chip capabilities within the United States.
